Chapter 6

Dante

I shoot three more rebels, then signal to the others to continue. We’ve been picking them off since we got here, stealthily approaching the hospital from behind. It was almost too easy, but I’m also highly motivated.

“Clear,” Phoenix yells and the rest soon follow suit.

Bishop hollers, “Come check this out.” Not finding Lucy, I head to the courtyard and freeze in my tracks at the sight of at least thirty dead bodies, all covered. Shoving my weapon at Cannon, I rush to the first and rip off the sheet before moving to the next. My heart is threatening to beat out of my chest, terrified I’ll see her as I check each of them. After checking the last one, I collapse in relief at not finding her. “You love her,” Bishop says, suddenly standing in front of me. During the flight, Cannon and Hawk kept us separated, so this is the closest we’ve been since the conference room.

“Of course I fucking love her!” I shout, jumping to my feet and getting in his face. “Why else would I be out here losing my mind trying to find her?”

“Easy,” Rogue says, playing the referee as he pushes between us. “We all love Lucy.”

“What the fuck did you say?” I glare at him. I know he and Bishop are friends, but the familiarity in his voice almost sends me over the edge.

“Relax. She’s like a sister to me, Stone, they’ve become my family. I want her back, too, but we need to do this as a team.” I know he’s right, but it’s hard to think logically when it concerns Lu. Brushing past them, I enter the building once again, Hawk at my back.

“Hostages stayed here,” he says. Agreeing, I search the room, trying to piece together what went down and spot the broken window and move closer. Hawk indicates a chair off to the side. “Escape?” He asks, thinking, like I am, it was used to break the glass.

“I sure as shit hope so,” I answer, glancing at the ground underneath the window and finding footprints, my gaze following the path they took.

“If so, Lucy would’ve gone to the military base one town over,” Bishop states as he joins us. When Cannon questions whether she’d know about it, Bishop is confident when he says she would and that’s where we should go next.

“You're wrong,” I call out, stopping him before he can leave. “She wouldn’t risk getting caught again, knowing they’d look there first.”

“They?” Phoenix wants to know.

“The ones who set up my team are behind this,” I inform them, to which Phoenix essentially tells me I’m losing it.

“Connections?” Hawk questions.

“I don’t have any. Yet,” I admit with a shrug. It’s just a feeling, but I’ve learned over the years to trust my gut and it’s screaming that I’m on to something.

“Listen, asshole, you may think you know my sister after spending a few days with her, but you don’t. And just because you claim to love her, that doesn’t mean you know her better than her own brother,” Bishop spits at me like venom.
